Did you Know – updates from Indralaya

Thank You’s All Around!

We really appreciate all the Head Cooks and the Volunteer Managers who have helped make the first work parties and programs possible at Camp. Thank you to Jeannie Chamberlain, Elisha Klco, CL Heidal and Arthur Van Gelder the Head Cooks, and to Andrie Levey-BatesLaurie Rotecki, and Michael Van Gelder the Managers.  Also a big appreciation to:

Leonie Van Gelder who has been training CL, the new Kitchen Manager

Rich Goode for training the new facilities manager-Steven Lucas

Tessa Ormenyi for coming in to fix electrical issues and cook breakfast meals.

Also a call out to the continued work of the Kitchen Updating team who has worked diligently these past 2 months:  Tessa Ormenyi, Jeannie Chamberlain, Crystal Mossman, Arthur Van Gelder, Kari Van Gelder and Leonie Van Gelder.

Mary Mowing the Meadow!!

And thank you to Mary Hart who has been going to camp to cut the grass this Spring and there is a lot of grass!  She even took the mower to Anacortes and had a specialist weld the bottom, fixing the blades to keep it going rather than having to purchase a new mower.

COVID Protocols for Summer 2022

Indralaya does not require a proof of COVID-19 vaccination.  In order to protect the health of our community, all participants starting at the age of 5 are required to have a negative rapid or PCR test prior to arrival and to send the results to registration@indralaya.org. A simple email confirming you have tested negative is what is required. The results must be obtained in the 24 hours prior to arrival at camp. Only those who have sent their results to registration will be allowed to attend the work party or program. Please test prior to your journey rather than at Indralaya. Masking is optional. Tables will continue to be available for those who prefer to eat outdoors.  If a camp participant develops COVID-19 symptoms, they are asked to  immediatley notify the camp registrar and remain in their cabin until tested.  They will be asked to leave if the result is positive unless they are too ill and will be given meals and asked to stay in their cabin until they are better.

Latest Addition to Summer Programs

Yoga – August 16-21

Instructor: Kathryn Tucker (KT) and Musician Tony Khalife (http://www.tonykhalifemusic.com). KT has been practicing yoga for more than 20 years. She approaches yoga as a practice with profound potential to benefit every aspect of life, on the mat and off. She incorporates physical postures, work with the breath, chanting, and meditation practices, creating an environment where each practitioner finds focus and internal stillness in his or her practice, while moving through a sequence of postures that invigorate, strengthen and balance the body and the mind.

KT will be joined by musician Tony Khalife, who will play music for some of the yoga classes and offer music some evenings. Tony brings the gift of transcendence through music.

A new generation comes to Indralaya
We welcome Lee, Steven and Jeannie

Board Updates

Indralaya has been hiring!

With the help of a very active Personnel Committee (they spent close to 400 hours this year defining, and restructuring Indralaya staff positions, consulting with a facilitator on staff satisfaction, recruiting,  advertising and interviewing), the Board is delighted to announce the addition of staff in 4 new paid positions.

We are excited to welcome Nancy Lewalder and Jeannie VanGelder (Office Coordination), Steven Lucas (Facilities Manager) and Lee Heidal (Kitchen Manager).

Nancy Lewalder has been hired as part of the Office Coordination Team in the role of Bookeeper.  Nancy has been coming to Indralaya for most of her life and brings her knowledge of Indralaya and history to the table.  Nancy worked in the library at the Quest Bookstore for many years and contributes that sense of organization to her position of Bookeeper.  She is the most patient person and is very grounded and compassionate.  Nancy now lives on Orcas island and is able to come to camp 20 hours a week to do bookeeping, payroll, ordering, and tracking of donations.  She is a very talented singer.

Jeannie Chamberlain was hired as part of the Office Coordination Team in the position of Registrar and will be the Temporary Summer Manager from June to October. We are very excited! She has already been training the fellowship staff, hosting staff meetings and coordinating the set up for the next programs.

Jeannie has been coming to camp for many years as Head Cook, Kitchen Manager, Board Member and participant in many programs.  She is also the welcoming person who signs in all the participators.  Jeannie has a great sense of humour and as a former nurse enjoys being with people. She has traveled the world in a variety of humanitarian projects. In addition, Jeannie will be responsible for the camp management and will be a central conduit for communication, information, and support until a Camp Manager is hired.  This position will be paramount to supporting all the Volunteer Camp Managers, Head Cooks, Fellowship staff and Daily staff during the next busy 4 months.  Jeannie is a very hard worker with a big heart who is keen to keep Indralaya welcoming and efficient.

Steven Lucas will be the Facilities Manager for Indralaya.  He is a past marathoner and musician who played in a band and really enjoys nature. Steven’s farming skills are very helpful with pruning and running a large area. He has extensive job experience as a Workplace and Facilities Manager. Steven is resourceful and creative in directing facilities, construction and maintenance operations. You will enjoy his great listening skills, compassionate nature, superb story telling and all the clever differences he has already added to camp.

Lee Heidal has been hired as the Kitchen Manager, responsible for sourcing and getting all the food for camp, keeping the kitchen organized assisting the head cooks and being the head cook if needed. She is the kindest person you will ever meet and has a very welcoming personality, is passionate about food and is a clever cook.  Lee really appreciates people, enjoys children and horses.  She has a calm manner and positive nature that she brings to the kitchen environment from years of working as an early childhood educator. Lee is safety conscious, is a team player, hard worker, excellent communicator, and appreciates working with people with diverse backgrounds.
